Feeling Good
January, 2012 | Creative Pains
I often wonder if what I do is truly art. If it wasn’t, I seriously doubt that it would ever get intertwined with my mood or state of mind. It’s sort of like, when an accomplish musician starts to make crappy music. Makes you wonder if the musician is still in love with the art? Or, is this artist just going through the motions. After all, what can possibly be so complicated about putting together a page layout for a website? It’s just boxes, text and an assortment of images – right? Wrong, if life was that simple, Kim Kardashian and Paris Hilton would not be celebrities.
Writing a post has gotten extremely more difficult it seems. I started off with Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” (shout out to Ye and Jay for the nostalgia) and made it all the way to the Tom Tom Club before I finished the first paragraph. I am usually not that easily distracted, but as of late it’s been quite difficult to stay focus. Focus on web development to be exact. I spend way more time searching for inspiration than creating. Asking random people for their opinion on your work is like opening a can of worms. They usually don’t care or have some other shit on their mind that will reflect on that opinion they have given you. This is rarely good or ever genuine. If your work is good it will speak for itself. If your work is great, people will come looking for you.
The one thing that I am sure about when it comes to networking in the web development field is to avoid the negative talk at all cost. I came across several characters of the sort at many forums. They usually despise designers, and anything remotely artistic. Several months ago one of these peculiar characters attempted to re-design his site and it turned out to be a complete disaster. For all of the bragging he has done in the past regarding his programming prowess, he was not able to get a simple JQuery function to work properly. It’s not the same when the giver is on the receiving end of the manure pile.
Everyone has an opinion, spiel, angle or gimmick. Somewhere down the line it usually involves slandering or discrediting someone else’s livelihood. I for one do not take part in this unusual style of marketing. I do enjoy watching those types make an ass out of themselves, which they usually do. Other than that, I simply do not discuss someone else’s business with a client. Perhaps I am a bit naïve or I am completely indifferent to what other people are doing to even give them a thought.
It’s completely silent now, no old school music to take me back to yester-year-decade, and no howling kids. Just me and my thoughts on this clunky keyboard. Indifference! Indifference is my theme, my mode for this year. Listening to other people trying to exercise their will over you is a waste of time. Let’s skip the bullshit and commit to doing business, saying something constructive and not being the asshole that you have come to believe is whom you truly are…
